Pembridge Hall Preparatory School for Girls

English

Great emphasis and pride is placed on the teaching of English at Pembridge Hall. We aim to produce confident communicators, fluent writers and avid readers. English is embraced through lively specialist lessons and in all subject areas across the curriculum. Weekly grammar, comprehension, spelling, handwriting, creative writing and drama lessons reinforce essential skills. Girls are encouraged to develop their own writing styles in which they can express their own individuality. From early synthetic phonics in the Kindergarten to exploring Shakespeare in Year 6, the teachers are acutely aware of the importance of developing written and spoken skills with the focus being upon both accuracy and creative flair.

Reading for pleasure is endlessly promoted and there are two well-stocked and current libraries, one in the Lower School and one in the Upper School. Literacy Week is a regular feature which hosts storytellers, poets and authors in school, as well as workshops at London museums and galleries. A whole school Poetry Recital Competition is held alongside an opportunity to dress up as your favourite book character. During their time at Pembridge Hall all girls are encouraged to be expressive and to hone their skills, to develop a great love and curiosity for the English language as well as excellent practical skills providing for a bright future whatever direction, they might take.
