Pembridge Hall Preparatory School for Girls

French

Here is a lively tour of French at Pembridge Hall: Kindergarten to Year 6.

The journey starts in the Foundation Stage where the girls follow the adventures of two puppets named Leo and Lulu.
At Key Stage 1, we move into the colourful world of animals, transport and people, learning about the special gestures and greetings. We carry on building the repertoire of traditional and modern songs.
At Key Stage 2 we begin to consolidate our grammar and pay particular attention to our accent. We embark upon an adventurous curriculum and move into the wider world.

Year 4 visit the very popular Europa Centre. Having gone through passport control the children arrive at a magnificent shopping area where they will discover a variety of shops. Questions abound! What shall I buy today? If unsure, a kind attendant will guide you through but not before exchanging your pounds for Euros. After a long day, why not stop at the café and taste the delicious croissants and pain au chocolat.

In Year 5 we find out about others. We make new friends and share cultural and personal information such as favourite subjects, activities and hobbies when writing to children in French schools.

The highlight of Year 6 is the much anticipated trip to the Chateau de La Baudonnière in Normandie, France. In preparation for the trip the girls take on many roles from reporters to historians. Interviews are very often taped and presented to the whole class for analysis. All fears of speaking the language vanish.
To enhance our linguistic learning experiences we invite the European Theatre in to perform while interacting with the children and singing catchy tunes. The topics vary from Rodin to Martinique and Recycling. It is always a success. Everyone takes part. We also celebrate the European Day for Languages visiting the 5 continents in 5 days. We learn how to greet in many languages, taste their delicacies and end the week with a quiz.
