Pembridge Hall Preparatory School for Girls

History

At Pembridge Hall, we believe that history is an important part of the curriculum. We recognize history as the study of people in the past and are concerned with how their actions have affected our lives today. History can help children understand the world in which they live and enable them develop a sense of identity.

At Pembridge Hall good practice is achieved through children being actively involved in the study of the past and comparing ways in which it is different from the present. We provide the girls with an opportunity to learn about important episodes and developments in the past, so that they begin to acquire a chronological understanding.

Pupils are encouraged to use a range of sources to stimulate their learning - information books, artefacts, photographs, timelines, DVDs and websites. In the Upper School the girls are encouraged to identify different ways in which the past is represented and to concede possible reasons for this.

Each child's full potential in the subject is extended through the practical learning experiences undertaken on educational visits - ranging from Kindergarten's visit to the Child Museum as part of their topic upon Toys, to Year 5 visiting Hampton Court for their topic on the Tudors.
History is an essential part of the primary curriculum and its teaching should fire children's curiosity about the past in Britain and the world.
