Enriching Opportunities

Unleashing your Child's Full Potential with a Diversity of Enriching Opportunities

Our holistic approach to education means that our young students enjoy a rich extracurricular programme, which is regarded as integral to school life. By pursuing their interests outside of traditional academia, our learners gain valuable personal qualities and abilities that benefit them both in class and beyond, such as confidence, teamwork, leadership, resilience, ambition and emotional intelligence. Moreover, through our comprehensive sport and club programmes, girls are challenged to hone their existing proficiencies and develop new ones. Diversifying and improving abilities is crucial when it comes to accessing top senior schools, where students' talents are further cultivated, and producing passionate, independent, curious and well-rounded individuals.

School Sports & Activities

All girls can participate in a range of sports and physical activities. With access to Paddington Recreation Ground and Kensington Leisure Centre, we are fully equipped to coach cricket, netball and rounders, among other sports. Selected girls join our elite Swimming Squad and Advanced Netball sessions, which take place in the early morning, and represent us in matches and galas throughout the school year. Younger students build their skills and fitness by playing fun ball-based games, meaning children of all ages are empowered in their mental, physical and social well-being.

Years 1-3

Our classes follow the Cecchetti standard syllabus, and girls are prepared to complete the corresponding examinations at the end of the Summer Term. Examinations are not mandatory, however, and children may choose to progress without taking them.

Years 1-2

If you love dancing, this is the club for you. Participants explore a range of dance styles through music, games and activities. They also create their own group dances and solos, building their knowledge of body movement and improvisation as they go.

Years 5-6

Fencing is an exciting team and individual activity. It is a fast, dynamic non-contact Olympic sport with a martial-arts style and combines fitness and athleticism with technical skill and precision timing. Participants learn how to move in a balanced way with proper footwork, score hits with direct and indirect attacks, and defend using parries.

Years 1-4

Gymnastics is taught by a specialist company, and participants work on improving their flexibility, agility, coordination and spatial awareness. Upon joining the club, girls start with the basics, before going on to learn new skills, such as rolling, vaulting and balancing, throughout the term.

Years 3-6 (Netball)
Years 5-6 (Advanced Netball - invitation only)

This club is aimed at all girls who are interested in playing Netball. They will develop their ball skills, footwork and tactics through a series of drills and match play. From here girls are selected according to ability to represent us against other schools.

Years 5-6

Running Club is an opportunity for the strongest runners in Years 5 and 6 to improve their stamina and technique for middle and long distances.

Years 3-6 (invitation only)

All girls may trial for the Swim Squad at various points throughout the year. Those selected train with physical education (PE) staff and an external coach at the Porchester Centre in early morning sessions. They also represent us in galas and other competitions.

Years 1-2

Yoga teaches many valuable tools. In these classes, we go through some of the traditional poses and sun salutations to improve strength, flexibility and confidence. Participants are taught breathing exercises to aid with concentration and stress management, and partner and group yoga encourage respect and awareness of others. At the end of each class, we spend 5 minutes in ‘Savasana’ (mindfulness/meditation) using visualisation, which helps girls to relax, concentrate and practise self-awareness.

Clubs & Wraparound Care

Our girls benefit from an expansive club programme, which seeks to encourage and inspire them as individuals. With a sizeable weekly offering of over 70 clubs, we encourage our girls to pursue personal interests and discover new and enjoyable activities, thus developing in a variety of areas.

To support busy, working parents, we offer wraparound care for girls in Reception to Year 2, in conjunction with our club programme. Learners can attend Early Club from 8:00am and/or after-school sessions until 4:30pm (Reception to Year 2), 4:45pm (Years 3-4) and 5:00pm (Years 5-6), enjoying a range of activities and games, and meeting girls from other year groups.

Years 5-6

In this club, girls will be doing advanced text-based coding using JavaScript. Students will be given the opportunity to build upon prior knowledge and be able to challenge themselves to get to grips with programming. They will also further their understanding of fundamentals, such as conditional logic, functions, loops and operators, developing fun and creative projects each week.

Years 1-5 (Art Club)
Year 6 (Art Portfolio - invitation only)

Every week, girls have the opportunity to express their creativity and use their imagination to produce different artworks.

Art Club allows them to extend their artistic proficiency by experimenting with various media and techniques, as well as being introduced to new artists. We use an array of tools and give students the freedom to interpret what they would like to make, paint or draw.

Art Portfolio is a selective club for girls who have shown ability in drawing and painting. They are encouraged to develop their skills further by attempting more advanced techniques through a series of exercises and projects.

Years 1-6

Chess Club is suitable for all skill levels, and is a great way to have fun while learning to think for yourself and develop a healthy competitive spirit.

Years 3-4

In this club, we introduce girls to text-based coding using JavaScript. Students learn to program by creating fun apps that work on computers and gadgets, like phones and tablets. They are also familiarised with fundamental concepts, such as conditional logic, functions, loops and operators, building visually exciting projects to engage them throughout the term and keep them excited to undertake new tasks each week.

Years 1-2

This club is a place for the girls to develop their computer literacy skills in an exciting and engaging format. Students explore and experiment with a variety of educational games. From practising coding to creating digital art and brushing up on their touch typing, there is something for everyone.

Years 3-6

Cookery Club by Smart Raspberry is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop the skills involved in cooking, as well as to experiment with different ingredients and, most importantly, enjoy food. Girls will make a wide variety of savoury and sweet dishes, some of which are ready to eat and some of which simply need to be cooked or heated at home. These classes will help participants to become more confident in the kitchen; increase their awareness of ingredients and encourage them to try foods they may not normally; practise maths and science in a creative way; learn more about hygiene; and have fun with food.

Years 5-6

Would you like to be able to convince others of your ideas? In this club, you can learn the skill – and power – of debating: the art of putting forward a point of view with such persuasive force that listeners are minded to agree. By participating in a range of fun activities and games, students can improve their proficiencies as well as take part in formal, structured debates. There is no better way to increase your speaking and listening skills.

Years 3-6

Come along to Drama Club to explore a plethora of stories, scripts and ideas. Participants get to experience directing, and develop their improvisation and collaboration skills. We also play exciting team games, and girls have the opportunity to devise their own performances and improvisations using props and costumes.

Years 1-2 & 5-6

Club Petit Pierrot is our new external club provider. It allows the girls to learn in a lively, structured environment, through play and educational activities, and thus to explore, engage, experiment with, and master French without any undue pressure.

Years 3-6

This club provides a space for girls to go and finish their homework under the supervision of a Middle/Upper School teacher. At Pembridge Hall, homework is used as a tool for the consolidation and reinforcement of concepts already learned. Therefore, while the supervising teacher will be able to support and answer clarifying questions, they will not be there in a 'teaching' capacity, as it is not a lesson. In Years 3-6, the expectation is that students can complete their schoolwork on their own. Once their work is completed, learners are expected to read independently until the end of the session.

Years 3-4

This is a great opportunity for girls to extend their learning by delving into the practical side of Humanities, including subjects such as R.E., History and Geography. Students are able to focus on a particular topic and use a variety of art and IT resources to advance their knowledge.

Years 1-4

Girls attending this club will tap into their creative side, using an exciting variety of beads to make bracelets, necklaces, rings, headbands and hair clips that are designs of their own choice.

Years 1-2

Our junior girls explore a variety of songs and focus on the technical aspects of singing in a group, such as vocal projection and part singing.

Years 5-6

Participants in this club learn that, behind the magic of experiments with everyday kitchen ingredients, lies scientific proof. Girls will discover different aspects of biology, chemistry and physics through marvellous chemical reactions and engineering projects. From lava lamps to static electricity, this club offers many ways for learners to apply their knowledge to wider contexts, and they will soon realise that science is everywhere!

Years 1-2

Lego Club allows the girls to explore their imagination and create their own sculptures in a relaxed yet purposeful environment. While working by themselves or with others to foster good communication and collaborative skills, they can choose to build something from a Challenge Card, develop their creativity and confidence, or work on their creations over a number of weeks.

Years 1-4

Our club provider Little House of Science will cover a different topic each week and provide demonstrations, activities and a take-home. Their curricula balance chemistry, biology, physics and engineering throughout each term.

Years 1-2

This well-being club aims to provide girls with the opportunity to reflect, relax and build resilience. Each week, we will complete a variety of mindful activities, so that students learn more about embracing and managing different emotions. It will also allow them to explore friendships and the challenges that may come with making new friends and keeping them.

Years 1-4

Mandarin Club is an exciting and informative way of introducing the Chinese language and culture to all girls from KS1 to KS2. A basic introduction offers a foundation to help them recognise and write Chinese characters, and memorise frequently used phrases. We foster enthusiasm for learning the language, while revealing the beauty of the associated culture through music and several traditional forms, such as calligraphy writing and paper art.

Years 1-2

Our girls can enjoy the opportunity to extend and challenge themselves with the help of Mathletics. This involves working on age-appropriate Maths questions and games to gain points that will earn them a coveted Gold, Silver or Bronze Certificate.

Years 5-6

In this club, learners direct, act in, or operate the camera in their very own film productions. We emphasise teamwork, embarking on various creative tasks and providing an exciting platform to explore different roles in filmmaking. From books and movie adaptations to live-action remakes, TV presenting, stop motion and more, this club is for those who love to perform and those interested in the technical side.

Years 3-4

If you are a fan of musicals, this club is the one for you. In this musical theatre-themed class, we will be dancing to some of your favourite songs from Matilda, The Lion King, Wicked and more. Engaging in this form helps to highlight performance skills, such as connecting with the audience and facial expressions.

Years 3-4

These sessions allow girls to create their own designs, learn and refine sewing skills, and use stuffing and decorating accessories. Learners in Years 2 and 3 can choose to make pencil cases, bags or cushions, while Year 4-6 students design and produce aprons, skirts, tops or dresses.

Years 4-6 (invitation only)

This invitation-only club allows girls to enjoy shared music making with their peers. Our broad repertoire ranges from traditional melodies to modern classics by ABBA and helps prepare learners for forthcoming performances, such as our Carol Service and Summer Concerts.

Years 4-6

Every Wednesday before school, girls in Years 4-6 warm up their vocal chords, explore various songs and focus on part singing and vocal projection. Year 5 and 6 learners with proven ability may be accepted into our Chamber Choir.

Years 3-4

Hola! This club is aimed at girls who do not already speak Spanish. We cover the basics of the language using games and songs, and students can expect to learn greetings, numbers, colours, animals and more.

Years 1-2

In this club, students will independently plan and write their own stories, producing a book that they can then keep. As the authors, they decide whether to write fiction or nonfiction, as well as selecting an appropriate genre. Over the term, they will illustrate their book, including creating an attention-grabbing front cover.

Learning Enrichment for Success in Class and Beyond

Enrichment provision at Pembridge Hall promotes the key critical thinking skills of reasoning, speaking up, open-mindedness and scepticism. Such proficiencies feed into both core and specialist subjects, enhancing ability in the eventual transition exams. Moreover, they are crucial tools with which our girls will face the challenges and choices that lie ahead in the increasingly complex world they will embrace as adults.

In Current Affairs, topics range from general considerations, such as the use and manipulation of numbers in the news, to specific events, like the last election in the United States.

Across Years 3-5, we generate a passion for unusual and captivating words, such as ‘loquacious’, ‘taciturn’ and ‘ubiquitous’, by encouraging girls to own them and bring them to life with a graded system of fun activities. The participants have commented: “I now have a lot more vocabulary in my brain…”; “I find it very useful when doing reasoning, Atom tasks and English at school.”

Particularly enriching events include mock elections, involving political parties campaigning on realistic policies, and Victorian criminal trials. This learner speaks for many when she comments: “I have become more confident at public speaking because I now know how to speak confidently and stand up for what I believe in. When I was being cross-examined, the prosecution caught me out a lot – it was fun because it was a challenge and I’m getting better at it.” Pan-school projects are also organised, such as the digital bank of readily accessible book reviews by pupils and staff alike, to motivate and inspire our girls to widen their literary horizons with enjoyment centre-stage.
