Maths is a vital part of life at Pembridge Hall, and is integrated into the daily programme of every year group in the school, with an hour of the teaching day dedicated to Maths lessons.
We aim for our pupils to become fluent in the fundamentals of Maths with a developed conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge confidently and accurately. We encourage them to reason mathematically and solve problems by applying their knowledge to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication. We aim to challenge each girl in Maths, wherever their talent may lie, and consider personalised tasks, often grounded in a real-life context, to be key in achieving this.
Beginning in Reception with a firm grounding in basic concepts of number, shape and measure, taught through practical, interactive activities, our girls progress throughout the Lower School to performing and recording calculations and collating and presenting data. Basic numeracy skills, such as times tables, are practised and consolidated in order to ensure that the more complex and challenging mathematical tasks undertaken in the Middle and Upper School are supported by a thorough understanding of number and swift recall of key number facts.
Pembridge Hall has excellent resources and we make good use of our interactive whiteboards and IT facilities in addition to a wide range of practical maths equipment. All pupils have access to the online resources Mathletics and Education City and we encourage the use of this at home as well as in school.
Girls in Year 5 and Year 6 take part in the annual Primary Maths Challenge which is a UK wide event. We find that this encourages enthusiasm, boosts confidence in the subject and shows the girls many different ways in which questions may be asked. It also gives our passionate mathematicians an opportunity to achieve UK recognition for their abilities. Girls in Year 6 also take part in the UKMT Junior Challenge in the Summer Term.
Our Maths Curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with enhancements to ensure every girl is challenged. We feel our pupils leave Pembridge Hall at Year 6 very well equipped for secondary level Maths; we are determined to instil a high level of confidence in, and enjoyment of, Maths in all aspects of everyday life. Our role is to empower our girls with the same level of enthusiasm for this endlessly fascinating subject that we feel as teachers so that they will continue to explore and discover the far-reaching effects that Maths has on all of us.
